Will #LatitudeMargaritaville Reinvent Senior Housing?
Margaritaville Part of A Growing Trend
With a tagline Escape to island-inspired living as you grow older, but not up, Jimmy Buffet is reinventing senior housing. While affinity communities have long existed long existed there are few in senior housing. In fact, I look back to the artist colonies and the Rainbows Santa Fe for LGBTQ folks as a frame of reference. However, last year I noticed a shift when I read A New Spin on Senior Living about Shanti Niketan. Now, Shanti Niketan a planned 55-plus community in Tavares, FL caters to Indian-Americans. As result, of their success might, other communities band together as they age?
Aging Well In Margaritaville?
Along comes Margaritaville. Perhaps Buffet’s Parrot Head lifestyle will usher in a missing component in senior housing. If you are unfamiliar with the term Parrot Head here is a brief description from Fins Left.
“A Parrot Head is a fan of Jimmy Buffett, Trop Rock music, and the tropical lifestyle and laid-back attitude! The typical Parrot Head is pictured to wear a Hawaiian shirt, flip-flops, and other tropical attire, and to enjoy drinking tropical drinks on the beach, or anywhere else for that matter. Parrot Heads often decorate their homes in tropical decor. In general, the life of a Parrot Head is one of relaxation and being on a permanent mental vacation even while at work.”
Trends in Senior Housing
Recently, Margaret Wylde of Promatura Group spoke at the UCSD Healthy Aging and Housing Symposium. Ultimately, Wylde said is there is a lack of active housing for adults age 55+. In fact, her measurement of success is when any age says,”This is where I could live.” Obviously, if there are Parakeets or Keets (a term used for younger fans of Jimmy, or children of Parrotheads) you know there is a market!

Currently, I am the Director of Program Innovation at Advocates For Aging. My claim to fame? First gerontologist to speak at South by Southwest. Another accomplishment? Freewheeling After Sixty the first book to make it easier for older adults to give up driving. Lastly, this summer I’ll be speaking at the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging on Let’s Talk Sexy: It’s Part of Aging.
