Farm to Table Next Door
When I walked down the street this morning I never expected to meet a Farm to Table OG. First OG, OG refers to the pioneers of gangster rap who were in it since the beginning. Now, it’s also used to describe people who are the originals of a movement. Second, Farm to Table is the term coined for a social movement that brings products from the maker directly to your table. No middle man, no shipping.
Do You Know Your Neighbor?
Today I’m visiting my old neighborhood. A place filled with many happy memories and good neighbors. While visiting one neighbor I caught a posting from another neighbor who lives down the street. She invited me to join her on a visit with another neighbor. My visit transported me to Bagheria a province of Palermo, Italy. As a 20-year-old she came to San Diego as a newlywed. Over the past 60 years, she created the farm of her girlhood in Bagheria.
A Farm Girl All Her Days
Now as Rosa enjoys the home she raised her children and now spends time nurturing her personal farm. Today we explored her tomatoes, zucchinis, and artichokes. Then I summoned up my best Italian, which is my worst Italian. We, three neighbors, shared our love of Italy, the language, and the memories travel creates. One of our trio soon departs for Rome. With her goes the excitement of her two neighbors as she travels through Italy. As I walked home I carry memories of a visit to Italy and of a sweet, Sunday morning with my neighbors.
Currently, I am the Director of Program Innovation at Advocates For Aging. My claim to fame? First gerontologist to speak at South by Southwest. Another accomplishment? Freewheeling After Sixty the first book to make it easier for older adults to give up driving. Lastly, this summer I’ll be speaking at the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging on Let’s Talk Sexy: It’s Part of Aging.
