August the Time for Legacy Building
What will be your legacy? While many think of August as the month to squeeze most out of summer I have another thought. Instead, it’s time to reflect and find inspiration on what is next. What will you create today? Perhaps what will you create that might live forever?
Short Conversations With Long Echos
Yesterday I had two unexpected and important conversations. First was the topic of respect. In this case, a friend and I discussed the importance of showing respect. As a frequent volunteer, she has noticed her efforts go unacknowledged. In turn, it leads to a feeling of disrespect for her efforts and time. By recognizing someone’s effort is to respect them. Second another friend in a short text said hearing your voice did more for me than my last hour of positive meditation music! Her brief message made me think of the power of appreciation and respect. These brief conversations have made a powerful impact as I think of the legacy of this summer.
August is “What Will Be Your Legacy?” Month. The opportunity to take action on what you will be remembered for. Now is the time to define what is important to you and how you want to be remembered. In the end, legacy is the influence you leave behind long after you have gone.
At the present time, I am the Director of Program Innovation at Advocates For Aging. When you think of older adults do you see America’s largest resource? I do. With this in mind, I combined my background in business with a desire to influence aging in America. For this reason, I was the first Gerontologist to speak at South by Southwest. Additionally, it’s why I wrote Freewheeling After Sixty. It’s the first book to empower older adults about their transportation choices.
