Travel Training

In 2012, while working at the City of La Mesa Judi Bonilla designed and launched “Travel San Diego” the first group travel training program for adults age 60 and over in the City of San Diego. Travel Training is teaching individuals how to ride public transportation confidently and safely. During her time with the program, she received several commendations from program participants. While teaching travel training and talking to her students, she identified another growing gap in services. The lack of information for older driver improvement and safety awareness. Currently, travel training is available through the non-profit Advocates For Aging Cares.

How It Started

Inspired by her students and propelled into action by the report Aging in Place Stuck without Options: Judi left the City of La Mesa and launched We Get Around in 2012. A solo volunteer effort she continued teaching the travel training and expanded the program to include a driving retirement. In the first year of the program, Women In Transportation recognized the program and awarded Judi the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award.

Judi continued her research and program development and identified the connection between using public transportation and increasing the physical activity of older adults. The American Society of Aging selected her research and program for inclusion in the 2012 national convention. In 2013, Hispanics In Philanthropy selected her as a fellow and supported her research in the link between public transportation and the risk reduction of chronic conditions leading to Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2014, the Association of Travel Instruction acknowledged Judi’s social entrepreneur efforts and honored her with the Jack Gorelick Outstanding Practitioner Award.

Experienced Drivers and Public Safety

In 2014, We Get Around became a program under Advocates For Aging Cares a 501c3 nonprofit. Though unsuccessful in their grant writing proposals the program continues as an Oasis San Diego class.  In 2015, to keep the momentum going Advocates For Aging Cares launched the inaugural Older Driver Safety Awareness Week in San Diego. Teaming with iTNGreaterSanDiego, Keepsake Companions, Southern Caregiver Resource Center, and Spedsta the coalition was honored by Councilmember Marti Emerald.
